you could buy finger cots-like condoms for fingers. but yes fingernails can hurt especially if they have long or unfiled nails and/or the woman isn't very lubricated and/or the person doing the fingering gets overly enthusiatic and scrapes down the vaginal wall. the inside of the vagina is like the inside of your mouth, it doesn't have much resistance to trauma. My advice if you want a repeat try, focus on her clitoris, rubbing the PAD of your finger across it as oppossed to plunging your whole finger into her vaginal opening-it'll probably make her more receptive to allowing you back twice and less possibility of nails/pain
