What causes those white spots on finger nails?

White spots on the fingernails is not an indication of a vitamin or mineral deficiency, like many believe. A calcium or zinc deficiency causing these white spots is a common old wive's tale. These spots, called leukonychia, are normally a result of nail injury.

Accompanied a sibling to the doctor when this same question was asked. What causes those white spots on finger nails?
lack of calciumWhat causes those white spots on finger nails?
It something to do with calcium I think?
It is calcium deficiency. Speak to your doctor about how much dairy you eat. You can get calcium tablets if you have a reasonable amount a day.
Lack of calcium.
I heard this was an indication of a lack of calcium in the body.
Do u mean the white spots at the start of the nail?

If so, Im 100% sure its the new nail growing.
nothing to much to worry about just a calcium deposit they grow out anyway
my gran used to say it was lack of calcium.... dont know whether it is true or she just wanted me to drink my milk
I was always told it was calcium deficiency.
Lack of zinc. Depending on how quickly your nails grow, at the time that spot was formed, you were probably low in zinc. A zinc supplement might be called for.
well all the other answers says it is calcium. i was taught that the white spots were bruises when you damaged the nail like slamming it in a door or banging it on a hard surface.
scarcity of Vitamin A in body. Drink lot of Milk and take fruits.
the white spots under your nails are trapped air.
Calcium deficiency apparently. Ive just looked and for the first time i can ever remember i dont even have one. Ive quit drinking milk about 6 months ago....so errr dunno.
i've read somewhere its anxiety and nervous tension, my cousin had loads of it throughout her childhood, she was abandoned by her mum
i agree with playgirl and george, i asked my doc as well and was told it was slight damage and bruising to the nail.
If it's just one spot it's probably from banging it. If it's lots of white spots it indicates calcium and zinc deficiency. Eat some nuts and seeds!
It could be calcium defficieny if its on just about every fingernail, if its just on one fingernail its more than likely the nail has just been bumped or trapped by accident.
Not enough calcium. Drink more milk.
unfortanatly you are all wrong it has nothing to do with a calcium def its called nail bruises i went to the docs once and asked the same question and he said they were nail bruises calcium or lack of does not cause these marks!
