Where do finger nails come from? And why is part of it pink and the other white?

Fingernails are tightly packed keratinized stratum corneum squamous epithelial cells---basically, a hardened extension of your skin. the part that is pink is still attached to your nail bed, and the white part is dead and unattached.Where do finger nails come from? And why is part of it pink and the other white?
I figured, so thats why i put ';basically, a hardened extension of your skin'; :)
