Being an actual human being with interests other than massage, I'm not going to tell you that appearance doesn't influence how we feel as women, and that you should ';get over it or get out';.
I had long, strong, beautiful nails before massage, too. Obviously now I can't have ANY at all - not even any white showing - because it hurts the client.
I agree with Seraphin: it honestly doesn't bother me one bit!
When I take time off or go on vacation, I get a full set of Solar Nails complete with gorgeous art! Then I soak them off with acetone on cotton balls wrapped in foil the day before work. A little blow dryer on top of that does the trick. I'm sure to coat my skin with Vaseline first so it doesn't burn my skin.Female Massage Therapists: how do you feel about not having finger nails?
I have absolutely no problem with keeping my nails cut short. It's actually much easier because you don't ever have to worry about them breaking. If I feel the need to dress them up for a special occasion or something, I'll get a French manicure so it looks like I have longer nails. Surely the length of your fingernails isn't the only thing that makes you feel feminine.
I had a massage from someone with nails that were too long (and they were only about a quarter of an inch; I noticed them later) and she kept scratching me, especially the bottoms of my feet, which are ticklish anyway. Just go ahead and do it. Your classmates and your future clients will thank you for not scratching them.
Well, I'm not a massage therapist but I cut my nails short for piano and guitar...
Its nice that your fingernails give a boost to your self-esteem, and I'm sure you know people who don't have long nails (female people obviously). Do they seem any less feminine?
You kinda get used to it, like, not being long. When I cut mine for piano, it was sort of frustrating, cause its kind of easier to make them shiny when they're long.
AND, no nails make life so much easier in small ways. I can type way better, play like, the piano well (doh), and its easier to eat my chips. Mine used to be pretty long though, don't know how long yours are.
Your situation can actually be summed up simply:
Massage School or Long Nails?
Anyway, I'm rambling and digress-ing, so what I really want to get across is:
HAVING NO NAILS HAS NOT DAMAGED MY FEELING OF FEMINITY AND HAS SOMEWHAT IMPROVED MY HAND COORDINATION ;-)
Nails have little to do with being feminine. It is how you feel on the inside that matters. You can do short manicures that still look nice so get over it or maybe this career isn't for you.
